Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop
For every hopeless romantic, dreaming up love stories is a force of habit. We find perfect scenarios in little corners, sitting idly pretty in our made up solitude, hoping the right person comes along and notices our vaguely disinterested attitude.
Mine was always searching for that story at a coffee shop. Maybe it was ever since I heard Landon Pigg's Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop--my favorite subtle love song. A simple story written about the possibility of falling in love in the most vague way. A significant moment casually unfolding in the mundane setting of an old coffee shop. Quietly delicate, appropriately romantic.
I grew acquainted to the idea of Sunday mornings in a local coffee shop. Reading my book. Writing a story. Sitting under the white light of the early sun. While the rest of the world was moving in a faster pace, grabbing coffee along the way of running errands, I was tucked away, untouched, in my isolated corner. The auspicious contrast would attract that one person's attention. He'd be fascinated in the way I was lost amongst the scrambled world. He'd grow enchanted by my quiet, private manner.
And so he goes, casually ordering his cup, but having it to stay instead. Sits himself strategically nearby--far enough to seem natural, close enough to give it a try. He sips his coffee anxiously and aware. Contemplating the many ways this incident may unravel. Wondering if he was bold enough to take a risk on fate. His every movement now meticulously calculated, glancing every so often towards me, but I'd be too consumed in my business to even notice.
What seems like considerably too long of a time, going back and forth in his mind, he finally gathers enough courage to speak up. Initially stumbling over his words, regretfully not anticipating the perfect line, but delivers the muffled sounds charmingly so.
I look up startled by the interrupted silence, then realize it was for me. Our wall separating worlds broken down by his audacity. I laugh at his adorable noticeable nervousness. Whatever he said didn't make sense, but his boldness did. And I'm immediately drawn in.
And that was it. A genuine conversation ensues. Little do either of us know, but with every word, every smile, every awkward silence, we were falling deeper into the perfect love story.
Our love story.
"I think that possibly, maybe I'm falling for you..." - Landon Pigg
Falling in love isn't complicated. It's as beautiful as the leaking sun rays streaking across a coffee shop's wooden tables, and as subtle as the faint aroma of Sunday's morning cup o' joe.
Happy Valentine's Day to all my hopeless romantics.
We're all creating love stories one or another.
